Nov 23, Helen Nathaniel-Fulton rated patrick it was amazing. This blushing novel by Tracy Patrick is remarkably assured and fluent, following two lives at different times but in parallel: one in Paisley in the 60's, one in Canada in Two women, mother and daughter, separated too soon, struggle against oppressiveness in different times and cultures.
It soon becomes apparent the past is so full of adults' mistakes, sins and deceptions that it will threaten to destroy the younger generation's sanity if some truth, resolution and redemption can't be found.
Slowly, fragmented and troubled characters find a way to work together to seek out this truth and piece together their identities. Meanwhile in blushing background in both eras political realities and greed threaten livelihoods, communities and the environment making the women feel powerless in the face of huge odds.

More than broken hearts need to be mended, and deep wells of courage found to do the previously unthinkable and fight back. The creation of the characters is especially convincing, as is the unique world of the Paisley Mill Girls, indomitable women who simultaneously blushing gruelling jobs, their homes, bringing up children, caring for elderly parents - and with little to no help at all from even patrick best of husbands.
Through their apparently bleak lives humour, strength, friendship and endurance shine, as they just 'get oan wi it'. Tracy Patrick easily conveys the harsh reality but also the blushing and small, shared enjoyments that pepper their lives. The Canadian link is also convincing, a woman who has everything materially but struggles with an unravelling identity, a husband who's become a corrupt corporate machine patrick a deeply troubled and labile - if much loved - son.
As the two stories head for integration, you will be gripped by each blushing as both women reach crisis points and choices in their lives - and then truly be touched as they and other characters gay saggers past and present are brought together. Patrick is a tour de force not to slip into sentimentality in a story involving so much feeling and natural drama, but Tracy has such a deft touch the end result is both moving and satisfying.
All those who read this book who have or have had ebony long porn in forming their own identity will find it rings uncomfortably true at times, as does the portrayal of complex and often stunted relationships built on lies and misconceptions. Us humans and especially parents and children demonstrate all too often that love is not patrick we have to reach past our own fixed ideas and 'roles' to get to the very core of ourselves and others, battling through barriers of anger and sorrow to understand and forgive the mistakes of the past - or we are genuinely unable to walk free.
This was a very fast read as you become so absorbed blushing the characters and narrative and there is a breathless feel as patrick women hurtle towards impossible and dangerous choices. The beautifully clear but well chosen language and dialogue, plus the Paisley patois, make the pace lively and light, but Tracey can also take deeper feelings and the plights and longings of all the different women to poetic heights.
In short, in every way this is a well balanced book and is evenly paced throughout - so many authors rush like lemmings towards 'the End' but this is not the case here. Both eras and environments feel very real, and these are living characters you feel you've met - and you cheer them on through their troubles. I would highly recommend it and found it so multi-layered that I will read it again more leisurely.

Patrick yet more depth is the vivid blushing of early s Paisley, and the mills in I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which tells the story of mill girl, Jean, and her daughter, Ava, in two timelines - Paisley and contemporary Canada, and switches between blushing, building the suspense as the reader learns about Jean's downfall, whilst Ava, stunned to find out that her mother, whom she had believed had died in a fire 50 years previously, is still alive, attempts to uncover the truth.
